Following The Tattoo Stencil

Do you ever have trouble following your stencil?

In this video we will dive into the importance of Following The Tattoo Stencil. I know for me upon beginning my journey I had this rather weird approach where I would simply start creating what was NOT in the stencil. I can understand if we are creating details or free handing something we can free hand. That was not the case with me, I would literally try my best to follow a line and could not follow it accurately, or I would put lines “where I thought they looked good”.

For whatever reason I could not just stick to the stencil. It was not until I started developing was when I saw that the design at hand is going to determine how I follow the stencil. Some lines will flow this way and I will have to find a comfortable position, others are a bit more difficult and very uncomfortable to pull and position all together.

Acknowledging this allowed me to pin point my strong points such as lining, smooth shading and my ability to do tiny details. Once I started focusing on my strong points I was then able to apply these fundamentals I was good at to the way I created my stencils. So now when making a tattoo stencil I can envision the flow and methods I am going to use to accomplish the tattoo at hand. If I am unable to envision my workflow upon consultation I would not take on the design because I won’t wing a tattoo nor will I take on a design that is outside of my capabilities.

By acknowledging my capabilities early on I am now able to pick and choose tattoos that I take on much more smoothly. Now upon making tattoo stencils I can always envision my workflow which also in return allows me to stick to the stencil at hand because I know how the design naturally flows and I have the capabilities to accomplish the design at hand.

For this tattoo I used my trusty and the new CNC P6 Tattoo Machine along with a Quelle 12-03RL needle cartridge. I prefer to use a 3RL for shading as I can be precise with where I put the ink.
