建造房屋, 看日落,實現夢想: 藝術家不重要

Presented March 29, 2014 at the Nasher Sculpture Center.

The Acclaimed Swiss artist and sculptor, Not Vital, is an aesthetic alchemist who delights in mixing up improbable combinations of materials – metal, plaster, fiberglass, 茶, coal, animal remains, melted pink Camay soap – in his quest to transmute the base into the sublime. A lifetime of traversing the globe, constantly engaging with local cultures and makers, has made an indelible mark on Vital’s practice, and an endless curiosity for engagement with new experiences, places and people remains at the heart of his work. In this 360 Speaker Series presentation, Not Vital discusses his ongoing architectural projects that sees him build houses on each continent in response to natural elements and cultural priorities of the location.

Not Vital was born in 1948 in Sent, Graubünden (CH). He divides his time between the USA, 尼日爾, Italy and China, as well as Switzerland. His works are inspired by personal impressions and experiences gained on his many trips around the world. He processes images and forms from various cultures into new sculpture projects and installations, always in keeping with the traditions of the respective cultures. His complex work integrates architecture as well as the general development of various different lifestyles and the typical repertoire of forms and symbols, according to location. His materials conserve the often volatile nature of the processes and objects, as well as of those organic materials which fascinate him; he favors the use of bronze, gold, aluminum, silver, stainless steel and marble. His anthropological curiosity structures his career into sections devoted to, for example, glass blowers in Murano, Tuareg jewelry makers in North Africa or paper artists in Bhutan. The titles of his mostly representational works are clear and descriptive, emphasizing the figurative dimension vis-à-vis the abstract appearance created by the durability of the material and the isolation from the cultural origin. The viewer is captivated by the tension between organic form and inorganic material in Not Vital’s work, which is distinguished by an almost meditative, timeless quality.

The Nasher Sculpture Center’s ongoing 360 Speaker Series features conversations and lectures on the ever-expanding definition of sculpture. Guests are invited to witness first-hand accounts of the inspiration behind some of the world’s most innovative artwork, architecture and design.
