Compass for Surveyors
This reinstallation of works from LACMA’s American art collection emphasizes 19th century American landscape painting, and a selection of photographs from the same period. The East Coast works, hung salon-style, dramatically outnumber the museum’s canvases portraying the West. Conversely, representations of the West abound in the museum’s holdings of early photography. The installation is designed to emphasize this contrast.
