Crafting America Spotlight Talk: Kathy Butterly with EJ Hauser

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Kathy Butterly is an artist living and working in New York City and Maine. She earned her BFA at Moore College of Art in 1986 and her MFA at University of California, Davis in 1990.Her work has been exhibited widely in the US and abroad. 在 2019, “ColorForm,” a mid-career survey of her work was exhibited at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, 加州. In September 2021 a solo exhibition of new work will be on view at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. 路易斯. 在 2018 James Cohan Gallery presented “Thought Presence” , her first solo exhibition with the gallery. Her upcoming show with James Cohan Gallery will be February 2022 in NYC. She has presented 6 solo exhibitions with the Shoshana Wayne Gallery which currently is exhibiting “Yellow Haze” running from January 22- 四月 3, 2021. From 2004 through 2017 Butterly exhibited 6 solo shows with Tibor De Nagy Gallery, NYC and from 1994-2001 presented 6 solo exhibitions with the Franklin Parrasch Gallery, NYC.
Her works are in museum collections including: 大都會藝術博物館, 現代藝術博物館, the Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Museum, 美術博物館, 波士頓, Art Gallery of New South Wales, 澳大利亞, among others. She has been the recipient of awards including: Guggenheim Fellowship Award, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, Anonymous Was a Woman Grant Award, Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, among others. Her works are currently represented by James Cohan Gallery in NYC and Shoshana Wayne Gallery, LA.
ABOUT EJ HAUSER
EJ Hauser’s painting practice is deliberately multifaceted, an aggregate of multiple threads and conversations. Discrete bodies of work coalesce to form a larger project, with subsets including text-based works, figurative painting, abstract painting, and conceptual approaches to color. Hauser approaches paintings first by establishing an armature and then building up and out from this initial structure. These early forms diverge and challenge singular readings of painting, canonical notions of “signature” practices, and gender identity as it relates to painting and art-making.
Hauser’s work has been shown at The Journal Gallery, Regina Rex, Cheim & 讀, James Fuentes, and Gavin Browns Enterprise, all in New York City, among others. Her work is represented by Derek Eller Gallery in New York and Philipp Haverkampf Gallery in Berlin.
