Horses, Gods, and Heroes: Dionysus

This animation was created in an undergraduate class in the Kinetic Imaging Department of Virginia Commonwealth University in Fall 2017. Working with VMFA staff members, students used animation to explore Greek art and culture. Drawing inspiration from decorated vases, these animations pay tribute to the beauty of these objects and to their function in the ancient symposium. Vase images educated ancient Greeks about their past, their culture, and their values; at symposiums, they served as conversation starters and prompts to imagine new stories and new versions of old stories – just as they inspired these students.
