Through the turmoil of the last decades, Serbia has not become an important tourist destination. The country has an amazing, in many places untouched nature and a rich cultural-historical heritage. Vojvodina lies in the north of Serbia. The autonomous province is part of the fertile Pannonian Plain, which extends over several countries. The village of Belo Blato is not only known for its excellent reed, but also for its unusual village community: people from 25 nations live in Belo Blato traditionally peacefully together. The inhabitants speak at least three languages.
Vojvodina is crossed by rivers and extensive swamps. Biologist Mihajlo Stankovic is searching for unknown and rare plant and animal species in the Zasavica nature reserve. On a small donkey farm, Maja tells how the most expensive cheese in the world is made. The south of Serbia is hilly, rich in dense mixed forests and sparsely populated. This is where most of the country’s national parks and nature reserves are located. The largest national park, the Djerdap, is located in the east at the border to Romania. The Danube meets the Carpathians there and has created valley breakthroughs of impressive beauty.
Bears live in the Tara National Park in the very west of Serbia. For many years, the largest European predator has been strictly protected and observed here, and the population is growing. The rangers Miodrag and Ranko follow the tracks of the shy animals and explore their habits.
The deepest gorge in Europe, the continent’s last primeval forests, important cultural sites and a unique diversity of species – just two hours’ flight from Germany lies an area of spectacular natural phenomena full of undiscovered beauty.
