Spotlight Talk with Artist Mark Dion
This virtual lecture recorded on July 20, 2021, features artist Mark Dion in conversation with Mindy Besaw, co-curator of “Crystal Bridges at 10.” Together, they take a close look at Dion’s practice, offering a rare glimpse into his cabinet of curiosities as well as the artist’s space.
In his installations, artist Mark Dion explores the ways museums collect, interpret, and display objects and natural specimens and how these practices shape public understanding of history,
knowledge, and the world around us.
In the exhibition “Crystal Bridges at 10” (on view July 11–September 27, 2021, at Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, 阿肯色州), Dion arranged art, 圖書, historic objects, cultural collections, and scientific specimens into categories evoking the four elements of air, earth, 水, and fire, which the ancient Greeks believe formed everything in the world.
To create a specific mood in each space, Dion designed wallpaper, selected paint colors, and constructed doorways to frame the experience of the collections of objects generously loaned by the University of Arkansas Museum Collections, Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, Arthropod Museum, and Herbarium Collections. Dion intended for his selection and arrangement of objects to spark curiosity and wonder—and to delight!
