The Courtauld Gallery to reopen in late 2021

The Courtauld is delighted to announce that our historic central London gallery is set to reopen in late 2021, following a major transformation project supported by £9.5 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and generous donations from foundations, individuals and other supporters.

Our spectacular Great Room, has been restored to its original proportions to provide a new home for our world-famous collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings including Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and the most significant collection of works by Cézanne in the UK, including Montagne Sainte-Victoire with Large Pine.

The Courtauld’s collection will be completely redisplayed and newly interpreted. Internationally famous works from the Renaissance to the 18th Century will be shown in the beautifully restored Blavatnik Fine Rooms, including masterpieces by Botticelli, Cranach, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Rubens.

There will be new and transformed galleries devoted to the Medieval and Early Renaissance collection, 20th Century art, and the work of the Bloomsbury Group. Elegantly designed new exhibition galleries will enable The Courtauld to extend its celebrated programme of international loan exhibitions, alongside smaller temporary projects.

Accessibility to the building will be dramatically improved, and new interpretation and display of the artworks will make them more engaging than ever before. A redesigned visitor reception will improve access, whilst a new Learning Centre will provide improved facilities for school groups, families, young people, community groups and adult learners. There will also be a new shop, and café. To support collection care, teaching and learning, the Conservation and Technology studios have been extensively rebuilt, and a new Object Study room created for students to work closely with The Courtauld’s collection.
