The Legacy of Klimt and Schiele

The conceptual and stylistic transformations initiated by Klimt and Schiele resonated with their compatriots and beyond. From Oskar Kokoschka’s expressionist outpourings and Christian Schad’s cool sophistication to Max Beckmann’s compressed metaphors and Otto Dix’s biting social critiques, artists across Europe responded to Klimt and Schiele by creating new and challenging works that continued to define avant-garde modernism throughout the first half of the 20th century.
