眼睛的科學: 藝術家 Ann Veronica Janssens 與策展人 Catherine Craft 交談

Ann Veronica Janssens speaks with curator and author Catherine Craft in conjunction with her Nasher exhibition – the first one person museum exhibition in the United States for the Brussels-based artist.

Known primarily as a light artist, Ann Veronica Janssens is interested in “situations of dazzlement… the persistence of vision, vertigo, saturation, 速度, and exhaustion”—in other words, how the body responds to certain scientific phenomena and conditions put upon it. At the Nasher Janssens installed several sculptural works that allow viewers to encounter shifts in surface, depth, and color, challenging perception and destabilizing their sense of sight and space. Her ability to create these sensations in the body is contingent on the way light acts upon and within architecture and the sculptural object. Often, to further extend the desired effects of light’s various qualities, she creates environments in which she can test the science of the eye with the manipulation of light within the space, sometimes deploying fog to act in giving shape, as it were, to light. Her projects are often based on technical or scientific facts, the results often akin to a laboratory revealing its discoveries.

Ann Veronica Janssens (b. 1956 in Folkestone, 英國) lives and works in Brussels, 比利時. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including WIELS – Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels (比利時), the Espai d’art contemporani in Castelló (西班牙), the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen (德國), the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin (德國), the Kunstverein München (德國), the Musée d’Orsay in Paris (法國), the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco (美國), the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham (英國), the Kunsthalle Bern (瑞士) the Beppu project (日本) , Museo Cappella Sanseverro, with Nord Project, in Naples (意大利) and Unlimited at Art Basel (瑞士). 在 1999, she co-represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale with fellow artist Michel François.

The Nasher Sculpture Center’s ongoing 360 Speaker Series features conversations and lectures on the ever-expanding definition of sculpture. Guests are invited to witness first-hand accounts of the inspiration behind some of the world’s most innovative artwork, architecture and design.
