Why do we travel? Chatting to backpackers from the 1990s
Wanderlust or escapism? The ‘hippy trail’ in the ’90s was no new phenomenon. Just as had happened in 1967’s famous Summer of Love, 1989 brought a second wave of wide-eyed, romantic young travellers into the backpackers’ loop.

Whilst they seem to share very similar attitudes to travelling itself, and have set about getting from A to B just as generations before them, there are arguably more ‘push’ than ‘pull’ factors now driving people to travel.
