“Breathing Flower” (2016, Choi Jeong Hwa)

“Breathing Flower” (2016) by Choi Jeong Hwa (出生 1961, Seoul), set up on the lawn outside the MFA’s Huntington Avenue entrance, seems very much alive. While many see plastic flowers as lifeless and fake, Choi redefines nature to include everything that fills urban ecosystems—whether it’s man-made or not—and challenges us to see value, art and beauty in things usually considered worthless.
