Carl Jung identified some symbols as pre-existing forms of the collective unconscious, as he discovered that they were recurring elements in very different cultures and societies, such as the snake, lightning or the rainbow. Jung recognised these symbols as archetypes.

This series traces his work and his message through the story of his life, his dreams, his travels and the memories of colleagues and patients. It includes footage shot at his home in Zurich, private footage recorded during his travels in Africa and America, and a previously unbroadcast interview with Jung recorded in 1956.
