集中收藏: The “Mona” in Arthur Dove’s “Boat Going through Inlet”

Arthur Dove lived a peripatetic life: born in Canandaigua, 纽约, he studied law at Cornell University before deciding to devote his life to art; he traveled to France to study painting; and then lived in New York City for a time. 在 1922, Dove bought a 42-foot yawl, theMona,” with his second wife, the artist Helen Torr.

The pair lived on the Mona for nearly six years, sailing throughout Long Island Sound and eventually docking the boat at Halesite, a small harbor town in the middle of Long Island.

Living on and near the water gave Dove the immediate contact with nature that had always inspired him, and made his rendering of the misty sea air and the rolling waves more evocative and effective.

在这个视频中, Rachael Z. DeLue, Professor of Art History at Princeton University, explains how Dove conveys the spirit of the sea inBoat Going through Inlet.
