Crafting America Spotlight Talk: Artist Joyce J. Scott with Dr. Leslie King-Hammond

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Joyce J. Scott is a printmaker, weaver, sculptor, performance artist, and educator from Baltimore, Maryland. She is most well known for her work in jewelry, beadwork, and glass. Her art reflects her take on all aspects of American pop culture, her ancestry, and the immediate world of her neighborhood. Her pieces serve as commentary for issues regarding race, 政治, sexism, and stereotypes. Of her own work, Scott says, “I believe in messing with stereotypes… It’s important for me to use art in a manner that incites people to look and then carry something home – even if it’s subliminal.” She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and MFA from the Instituto Allende in Mexico. Her work is in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art, Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Spencer Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
ABOUT DR.LESLIE KING-HAMMOND
Leslie King-Hammond is an art history professor at Maryland Institute College of Art and the founding director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA. Born in the South Bronx, King-Hammond grew up in South Jamaica and Hollis-Queens, 纽约. After completing her public education, she won a full stipend-tuition scholarship awarded under the SEEK Grant (Search for Education, Evaluation, and Knowledge) at the City University of New York, Queens College. She attended Johns Hopkins University under a Horizon Fellowship for doctoral studies in art history, and later began to teach art history courses at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). 在 1976 she completed her PhD and was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies at MICA. 在 2008, she retired to become Graduate Dean Emerita and was appointed to her current role at the Center for Race and Culture. As a member of the “Girls of Baltimore,” she won an NEA artist grant in 2001. 在 2006, King-Hammond was appointed Chairperson of the Collections and Exhibits Committee at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture and in 2007 became the Chairperson of the Board of the Lewis Museum. She also sits on the Board of the Creative Alliance for the Artists, Baltimore, MD.
