Impressions of space, 环境, and home are central to the work of South Korean artist Do Ho Suh, which explores memory through materials and architecture.

His delicate fabric sculptures depict rooms, thresholds, and passageways from the artist’s former homes.

The structures’ translucence evokes the nature of memory: somewhere between real and unreal, visible and invisible.

They are actual size and painstakingly sewn, with doorknobs, molding, and outlets crafted in precise detail.

The works shown here, Hub 1 和 2, both dated 2018, represent two spaces from the artist’s childhood home in South Korea—the entrance and eating area—connected to form a passageway.

Speaking about his connection to home and its relationship to the broader theme of migration, the artist has stated “I consider migration to be a process, not something that happens overnight. Each step of the process is like crossing another threshold.”

By imaginatively linking places he has lived, Suh reconfigures memories of home—across both time and space—in the present for the viewer to experience firsthand as they retrace the artist’s footsteps through these intimate domestic spaces.
