It’s been in the spotlight recently following a standoff between authorities and environmentalists over the construction of an agriculture water storage project in Western France. The local project grabbed national headlines after violent clashes between law enforcement agents and activists who’s methods, according to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, amount to “eco-terrorism”.The situation is potentially explosive for the government which is eager to nip it in the bud before it spirals out of control. Critics say there’s a growing extremism of the environmentalist movement, but the tradition runs deep here in France.
