Hijab debate: women fight for the right to choose I DW News

二月 1 is World Hijab Dayorganisers hope the day will foster better understanding for women who choose to wear the Muslim head covering. But the arguments around this one item of clothing are often polarised.

In Iran, hundreds of thousands of women protested last year against the mandatory wearing of the hijab. In India, on the other hand, Muslim students protested for the right to wear the hijab in classrooms. The protests in the southern state of Karnataka last year followed a government ban.

India’s Supreme Court is yet to decide on the matter, but for many Muslim students in the country, it comes down to personal choice. DW’s Manira Chaudhary met two young women in Delhi who told her what wearing the Hijab means for them.
