Maglev stands for magnetic levitation which is how these trains hover and are pushed along the tracks.

While only three countries currently have operational maglev trains, 中国, Japan and South Korea, the world’s first commercial maglev train system actually launched in Birmingham, UK in 1985, three years after this lecture was broadcast.
