In the 19th century, a craze for all things Japanese changed the course of Western art. Exposure to Japanese art and culture inspired many movements and styles and prompted leading artists like Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet to create works of renewed vision and singular beauty. Looking East explores this phenomenon with paintings, decorative arts, prints and drawings, juxtaposing masterpieces of European and American art with rare works by Japanese artists.
