Modern Front Door on Traditional Home | 建筑学 & Design

This video is about a modern front door on a traditional home. Today I’m going to give you a quick glimpse of one of the many projects I’ve worked on over the years. It’s a renovation project and in specific, a contemporary front door we did for a client with a traditional home. I worked closely with the owner, interior designer, and general contractor when working through this design challenge. First, I put together a wide variety of options to review. We quickly settled on a hybrid option with a more traditional door and transom at the center with very contemporary sidelights. They are essential tall windows with a minimal frame. Then it was time to detail the design for pricing. I spent a lot of time thinking about the door and window jambs since this detail was crucial to the size and aesthetic nature of the sidelights. We also decided early on an 8’ tall door with one panel above. We used a panel detail already found in the house and settled on wood minimal wood jambs that kept the cost down, to some extent. The objective for the door with transom above was to make it feel tall, and yet in scale with the tall interior ceiling heights and exterior volumes. As you can see we also decided to keep all of the existing interior moldings in the foyer right up to the edge of the new sidelights. We all agreed that the door could stand alone as a more traditional element, flanked by contemporary sidelights that ultimately sit within the framework of otherwise traditional space with moldings. And the result works quite nicely. I’m Doug Patt. We’ll see you next time.
