Montenegro also called the country of the black mountains, lies on the southeastern Adriatic Sea between Croatia and Albania. The country has been independent and sovereign of Serbia since 2006. Montenegro is barely 14,000 square kilometres in size and sparsely populated. It boasts a diverse natural landscape full of contrasts, a coastline full of bays with extensive wetlands, crystal-clear glacial lakes, karstic peaks and deep gorges. Many of Montenegro’s natural treasures are unique and breathtaking, making them protected as a national park or “natural heritage of mankind”.

The ornithologist Ondre Vizi observes the colony of rare Dalmatian pelicans on Lake Skadar (Montenegrin: Skadarsko Jezero). Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula and one of the most important bird reserves in Europe.

Montenegro’s last raft builder, Goran Lekovic, crosses the Tara Gorge, the deepest in Europe and one of the deepest in the world next to the Grand Canyon in Colorado. In the fjord-like bay of Kotor live the descendants of the most influential seafaring family of the bay, and Zoran Vojinovic presents the peaks of the Durmitor massif and leads in a breathtaking tour through the Nevidio Canyon.

The deepest gorge in Europe, the continent’s last primeval forests, important cultural sites and a unique biodiversity – just two hours’ flight from Germany lies an area of spectacular natural phenomena full of undiscovered beauty. The five-part documentary series “The Balkan Express” is a visually stunning voyage of discovery through mysterious landscapes and untouched wilderness in the middle of Europe. The stations are Slovenia, 克罗地亚, 黑山, Macedonia and Serbia.
