Plaster Casts and New Ways of Seeing the Past
The long tradition of studying and drawing plaster cast reproductions of sculptures for artistic training is exemplified by artists such as Matisse, Rodin, 毕加索, and Paul Manship, who studied plaster casts of ancient Greek sculpture while pioneering modernism. In conjunction with the exhibition “Paul Manship: Ancient Made Modern,” Fairfield University professor of art history, Katherine Schwab provides context for the importance of plaster casts as vehicles for learning.
