Police clamp down on protests as India’s Narendra Modi opens ‘temple of democracy’ | 德国之声

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the country’s new Parliament building to much fanfare and controversy. At the time that he was busy with dedicating what he called the ‘temple of democracyto the people, police were suppressing protests by those very people.

Championship winning wrestlers were being tackled to the ground to prevent them from protesting against perceived government inaction in a case of sexual harassment. A member of Modi’s ruling BJP stands accused of molesting wrestlers, including a minor. Accusations which made no difference to grand plans to inaugurate a swanky new Parliament.

For more context on this, we speak with journalist Shalu Yadav in Delhi.
