William McTaggart was the most important Scottish landscape painter of the late 19th century. He was born within reach of the Atlantic Ocean and spent all his summers painting it. In the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh hangs what is probably his most famous painting, “The Storm”, painted in 1890. The fishing boats are in distress at sea, taking on water and being blown out. But the real subject is the storm itself: land, sea, and the sky.
