WATCH: Biden tells GOP he will veto attempts to raise drug prices | 2023 State of the Union
In his second State of the Union address, President Joe Biden heralded the Inflation Reduction Act, his signature legislation passed in 2022 that put caps on the prices of prescription drugs like insulin for seniors on Medicare.
After chastising the pharmaceutical industry for overcharging for insulin, Biden urged Congress to expand that price cap, saying “Let’s finish the job this time. Let’s cap the cost of insulin for everybody at $35.”
And he spoke directly to congressional Republicans, some of whom have said they would like to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act.
“Make no mistake: If you try anything to raise the cost of prescription drugs, I will veto it,” Biden said.
Biden’s Feb. 7 address comes a year after Russia invaded Ukraine and amid new diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and China over a suspected surveillance balloon. This is Biden’s second State of the Union address, as his first was a joint address to Congress in April 2021.
Last year, Biden used his address to emphasize themes of bipartisanship and unity. But he now faces a split Congress, with the GOP-led House launching efforts to investigate his family and his administration.
