Buckingham Society Virtual Lecture: Winterbotham Collection

In 1921, Chicago businessman Joseph Winterbotham outlined a plan for a new collection of paintings at the Art Institute guided by a radical idea: that going forward, a work could be sold or exchanged for one of superior quality in an unceasing effort to refine and enhance the collection as a whole. With the Winterbotham family’s support, the museum assembled a world-class collection of 35 paintings. Today, the Joseph Winterbotham Collection continues to evolve as new acquisitions join old favorites in the museum’s galleries.

Join James Allan, executive director of philanthropy, for a centennial celebration of the Winterbotham Collection and a look at how this collection and component parts have changed through the years, inspiring members, visitors, and museum donors.
