The Crossing features video portraits of 11 LGBTQI+ refugees living in the Netherlands, whom artist Carlos Motta met through the Dutch organization Secret Garden.

Here, six individuals narrate the experiences they each faced before and after their immigration to Europe.

Motta presents these stories as video portraits, in which the subjects retain agency over the content and details of their stories.

Depicting harrowing moments of struggle and survival and complicated relationships to home and family, these portraits illuminate how persecution based on sexual and gender identity affects vulnerable migrant populations.
