Community Conversation: The Natural Bridge and the Monacan Indian Nation

The Natural Bridge is one of the most frequently depicted sites in 19th Century American landscape art, but this body of work largely obscures the historic and contemporary presence of indigenous Virginians. Tribal member Victoria Ferguson and her husband Dean worked at the site for over two decades, presenting knowledge about the cultural aspects and biodiversity of the Natural Bridge. The Fergusons consider the complex legacy of the Natural Bridge with exhibition curator, Dr. Christopher Oliver, and Dr. Johanna Minich, Assistant Curator for Native American Art.
