Henze describes this instrumental work, comprising nine concertos, as “secular, multicultural, an act of brotherly love.” Dramatic and moving, it begins in a mood of delicate tenderness, ends with a radiant, hymn-like Sanctus, and incorporates savage satire, as well as both piercing and subdued grief.
