Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Willie Cole, Julie Langsam: The Artist and the City | PAFA – Art At Noon

Join us for a special Art at Noon with artists Jonathan Lyndon Chase ’16, Willie Cole, and Julie Langsam whose works draw inspiration from the American city. Dive into Jonathan Lyndon Chase’s experience as a gay black man navigating city streets, Willie Cole’s time exploring abandoned industrial sites, and Julie Langsam’s exploration of American modernist architecture. Moderated by Director of the Brodsky Center’s Paola Morsiani.

For over three decades, Willie Cole has used found objects, including women’s shoes and steam irons in his sculptures, paintings, and works on paper, to echo references to West African culture and diaspora, from tribal masks to slave ships. Cole places great importance in revealing the spiritual energy in found objects, through formal and semantic associations.

An alumnus of PAFA, where he obtained his MFA in 2016, Jonathan Lyndon Chase dedicates his paintings to intent examination of intimacy and the aspiration to authenticity from his individualized perspective as a black queer artist. His exploration of domesticity and identity fuels a highly personal expressive language.

In her paintings, drawings and photography, Julie Langsam explores the legacy of Modernism by looking at the ongoing relationship of its powerful architecture to the evolving spheres of human emotions and spirituality. She also investigates the expressive potential of photography and architecture, two of the most influential languages in 21st century global culture.
