Water politics – Bulgarians who journey 12km daily to fetch a drink

A resource most of us fortunately take for granted, water can make or break us as human beings. Turning on the tap to wash or drink forms part of our everyday, though this is no longer the case across Europe as a whole. When recession hit across Europe in the late 2000s, several governments found themselves forced to cut back public spending in a major way. For some countries, Greece and Bulgaria included, this meant selling off publicly owned franchises and infrastructures. Whilst this has previously been commonplace for some industries, the recent commodification of water in Europe has led to a lot of controversy and debate. As the European Union hints at potential further such private ownership, we take a look at how the privatisation of water supplies has affected various Europeans so far.
