The border post on the alpine frontier between France and Italy is crumbling. Meanwhile, down by the sea, people hoping for protection and a better life in Europe are being turned away. Europe has become a continent of contradictions. Once upon a time, the fall of the Iron Curtain and the increasing permeability of European Union frontiers represented growing unity. 現在, more police are guarding borders like the one between Liguria and the Alpes Maritimes than perhaps any other frontier within the EU. 這裡, France is turning away refugees who have reached Italy mainly via the Mediterranean or the Balkan route and want to move on to northern Europe.
