Educator Speaker Series: Culturally Responsive Teaching in the Arts Classroom

Join arts educator Flavia Zuñiga-West to learn how to co-create community norms in the classroom and understand students’ cultures and identities through a deep dive into the practice and theory of Culturally Responsive Teaching Strategies in the Arts, with a focus on anti-bias and anti-racist education. Expect to leave with daily practices that can be used in the classroom and for personal growth around supporting our students from BIPoC communities in and through the arts. Be sure to bring your sketchbook to visually process ideas through drawing, journaling, and collage!

Flavia Zuñiga-West is an arts educator, curator, professional development facilitator and founder of the nationally renowned Adding Voices Conference and Symposiums. Flavia specializes in culturally responsive curriculum development that utilizes critical multiculturalism pedagogy, Black & Chicana feminist theory, and anti-racist frameworks in order to reframe the art historical canon by centering contemporary BIPoC artists in her work and the work she does with students. Additionally, Flavia offers professional development opportunities for art teachers, museum educators, community arts instructors and teaching artists through regional and district workshops, webinars, and keynote engagements.

The Educator Speaker Series invites K-12 teachers to present on crucial topics in art education that center on criticality and social justice.
