Breakfast by Juan Gris: a collision of perspective and techniques | Artworks Explained
Among the major works by Braque and Picasso, a vertical composition immediately catches the eye at the Centre Georges Pompidou: the still life by the Spaniard Juan Gris entitled “Breakfast” (Le Petit déjeuner). Sparse contours reveal a coffee grinder, pot, bottle, bowl and a newspaper.

Juan Gris (1887-1927; born José Victoriano Carmelo Carlos González-Pérez) was a Spanish painter. Along with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, he is the main representative of synthetic cubism. Gris mainly painted still lifes in which he placed pictorial elements next to and on top of each other as collages. Gris incorporated the new design principles of Cubism into a rational system and throughout his career endeavored to convey his artistic approach theoretically as well.
