Iran executed more than 570 people in 2022, report slams ‘killing sprees’ | DW News

Use of the death penalty is exploding around the world, according to a new Amnesty International report. Most executions are happening in China, though authorities don’t disclose official data.

The second biggest issuer of the death penalty is Iran. And since the death of the young woman, Jina Mahsa Amini, in police custody triggered mass protests last year, executions have risen sharply.

Raha Bahreini is a human rights lawyer and Iran researcher at Amnesty International and talks about the 80% increase in executions in Iran in 2022.

The number of people executed last year spiked to its highest level in 5 years, according to Amnesty International .
