Artist Mark Dion evokes the four elements through immersive installation in “Crystal Bridges at 10”

In his installations, artist Mark Dion explores the ways museums collect, interpret, and display objects and natural specimens and how these practices shape public understanding of history,
knowledge, and the world around us.

In the exhibition “Crystal Bridges at 10” (on view July 11–September 27, 2021, at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas), Dion arranged art, books, historic objects, cultural collections, and scientific specimens into categories evoking the four elements of air, earth, water, and fire, which the ancient Greeks believe formed everything in the world.

To create a specific mood in each space, Dion designed wallpaper, chose paint colors, and constructed doorways to frame the experience of the collections of objects generously loaned by the University of Arkansas Museum Collections, Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, Arthropod Museum, and Herbarium Collections. Dion intended for his selection and arrangement of objects to spark curiosity and
wonder—and to delight!
